We welcome back Garry Ramsay for his fifth year as senior coach with Richard Geary again providing assistance from the bench.
Dave Doherty continues as reserves coach while Scott Plant takes over the under-19s. One familiar face who will be missing is our long-time captain Kane Shaw who is fulfilling his dream to teach overseas. Justin White and Hamish Paynter will share the captaincy in 2017. In the reserves, Rory Scott and Travis White have been appointed co-captains. There is one new face in the senior line-up tomorrow – Ned Mabon, a close-checking defender from Tatura, who has had some experience at VFL and TAC Cup level. Welcome Ned! Meanwhile dual premiership defender Steve Kelly announced his retirement last night due to ongoing back issues but father-to-be Steve will be around the club lending lots of moral and vocal support.
Unfortunately, our under-19s will not play their first official match until April 29. Both Hurstbridge and Heidelberg, our opponents in the first two rounds, are unable to field an under-19 side which is most disappointing (and that is some understatement). Thankfully Bundoora, who also have a bye this weekend, have agreed to play a practice match against our boys tomorrow morning at Heidelberg. They won’t be hanging around for the senior premiership flag unfurling.
After the game head back to De Winton Park for a casual night of drinks, music, footy on the TV and pizzas.
This year’s lunch on Saturday, April 29, will feature former AFL player Lance Picioane who will speak about his battle with depression since retiring from the game. He is now helping others through his Me Love You program. Cost is $30 a head and includes a two-course lunch, with drinks at bar prices. KERRY O’KEEFFE NIGHT
We are delighted to announce the return of Kerry O’Keeffe (‘The Skull’) for a great night of entertainment. After his sellout function in 2014, Kerry is back, this time to delight us at De Winton Park on Saturday, April 22 at 6.30pm. Cost is $85 a head, includes gourmet food, and pre-dinner drinks package (beer, wine, champagne, and soft drink). Contact Michael Lovett 0418 380979 or Michael.Lovett@afl.com.au
This year’s lunch features Dane Swan. Save the date – Friday, June 23. More details to come.
We are fielding two teams in the NFL netball competition in 2017. Macleod 1 kicked off last week, going down 35-24 to Bundoora and Macleod 2 had a bye. Tonight Macleod 1 plays Heidelberg at RMIT at 9pm while Macleod 2 takes on Mernda at RMIT at 6.30pm.
There are two coterie groups providing invaluable support for the club. The Golden Kangaroos will be run by Bryan Bottomley 0418 353 685 while the Kangas are under the stewardship of Bruce McDonald 0419 887 667.
We thank all our sponsors for their commitment in 2017. If you are interested in becoming an MFC sponsor at any level, see Damian Hurley.
